Emisi gas yang dihasilkan oleh China semakin meningkat seiring dengan bertumbuhnya ekonomi China. Hal ini menjadikan China sebagai penghasil gas rumah kaca terbesar di dunia. Pada tahun 2005 China menghasilkan 7–7,5 miliar metrik ton CO2, tahun 2015 China menyumbang sekitar 28% dari total di seluruh dunia, hingga di tahun 2020 China menghasilkan sekitar 2,9 miliar ton karbon per- tahunnya yang mana jumlah ini merupakan seperempat dari jumlah di seluruh dunia.
